Disc Golf Course Coming to Richmond Hill |
Exploring the disc golf proposal and the future of disc golf in Richmond Hill |

Something is flying through the air in Richmond Hill — and it is not just frisbees.
A proposal to bring a dedicated disc golf course to the city has been generating quiet but steady buzz among outdoor recreation advocates and park enthusiasts alike.
For a community already proud of its 167 parks, 162 kilometres of trails, and nearly 700 hectares of natural areas, the idea feels like a natural next step.
The disc golf proposal comes at a time when Richmond Hill's parks system is actively expanding its roster of modern amenities — from pickleball courts to outdoor fitness stations — all guided by a forward-looking, council-approved parks strategy.
Disc golf fits neatly into that vision.
The sport has become one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities across Canada, with over a thousand new courses added globally in 2024 alone — the fifth consecutive year of that milestone.
Ontario alone now boasts more than 90 registered disc golf courses, and the demand from Richmond Hill residents for accessible, low-barrier recreation continues to climb.
Disc golf is widely regarded as one of the most cost-effective recreational installations a municipality can pursue, requiring relatively modest capital investment and minimal ongoing maintenance compared to traditional sports facilities.
That affordability argument may prove decisive as city planners weigh priorities against budget realities.
The sport draws players of all ages and abilities, from school-age beginners to seasoned competitors, making it one of the rare recreational options that genuinely serves an entire community.
Advocates say a well-designed course could become a signature destination within the city's already impressive park network.
With Richmond Hill already attracting competitive disc golf players from across York Region, the case for a dedicated, permanent course is only getting stronger.
The future of disc golf in Richmond Hill may still be taking shape — but the momentum behind the proposal is real, and the community is watching closely. |

167 parks and we still have to go to Markham for disc golf. Hopefully this actually moves forward and doesn't just sit in committee for three years.
Been waiting for something like this in Richmond Hill. My kids and I drive out to Barrie just to play a proper course. Would love to have one closer to home.
Pickleball got its courts so I'd say disc golf is next in line. Low cost, easy to maintain, lots of interest in the area. Makes sense to me.
Hope they pick a good location and don't just squeeze it into a tiny corner of some park. Course design really matters for this sport.
My kids would love this. It's one of those activities the whole family can actually do together without anyone getting bored after five minutes.
167 parks and we still don't have a disc golf course? Seems like a no brainer honestly.
Been playing disc golf at courses in Markham and Aurora for years. Would be amazing to finally have something local so I'm not driving 30 minutes just to throw some discs.
