Driver Clocked at 92 km/h in Richmond Hill School Zone

The driver was caught travelling more than twice the 40 km/h limit as York Region rolls out new school-zone safety measures following Ontario’s ban on speed cameras.

A driver was caught travelling 92 km/h in a 40 km/h Richmond Hill school zone during the first week of school, according to York Regional Police.

The driver was charged with speeding and driving more than 40 km/h over the limit in a zone where the speed limit is under 80 km/h, Const. Caroline de Kloet said.

The incident comes as police, York Region, CAA South Central Ontario and the Ministry of Transportation promote enhanced safety measures around schools.

Those measures have taken on added importance since Ontario banned municipalities from using automated speed enforcement cameras last November.

York Region is now using alternatives including optical speed bars, “slow down” road markings, more visible pavement markings, reduced speed limits and permanent speed-display signs outside schools located on regional roads.

But regional traffic safety officials say those measures haven't matched the effectiveness of speed cameras.

“Speed cameras were very effective,” said Nelson Costa, York Region’s manager of traffic safety and signal operations. He said the region hopes a combination of new measures can bring speeds closer to the reductions previously achieved with automated enforcement.

Police say enforcement and education will continue, but ultimately drivers need to take responsibility — particularly around schools where children may be walking, cycling or skateboarding.

The message for drivers is a simple one: slow down and pay attention.

As Costa noted, reducing speed can make a major difference in someone’s chances of surviving a collision.

  Dave M.Exactly. 92 is highway speed. You don't accidentally end up going that fast in a school zone, you're just completely checked out. Hope the fine was a big one.

  It's a truly alarming figure, more than double the limit even on a highway, let alone a 40 km/h school zone during the first week of school. As Const. De Kloet's charges reflect, this is precisely the kind of dangerous behaviour that makes enforcement around schools so critical.

  It's a jarring number, and your concern is completely understandable, as Nelson Costa and York Region traffic safety officials have themselves acknowledged, the cameras were "very effective" and the alternatives so far haven't matched that impact. Hopefully the pressure from parents like you helps push that conversation forward.

  Tracey M.Same, my daughter walks that stretch too. I genuinely don't understand what the province was thinking pulling the cameras. The signs and painted lines are not going to stop someone doing 92.

  It really is a shocking number, more than double the 40 km/h limit, which is exactly why Const. De Kloet confirmed the driver faced not just a speeding charge but also the more serious charge of travelling over 40 km/h above the limit in a reduced-speed zone.

  Dave M.Agreed. And this was the first week of school too. Kids are everywhere at that time, backpacks, bikes, the whole thing. Unreal that someone thought that was okay.
