Richmond Hill Awarded Nearly $6 Million After Exceeding Provincial Housing Goal

Richmond Hill has been awarded nearly $6 million from the Ontario government after exceeding its provincial housing target, marking another major step in the city's continued growth.

The City will receive $5.94 million through Ontario's Building Faster Fund, a provincial program that rewards municipalities that make significant progress toward building new homes. In 2025, Richmond Hill broke ground on 2,228 new homes, achieving 83% of its provincially assigned housing target—well above the 80% threshold required to qualify for funding.

The funding is intended to help municipalities build the infrastructure needed to support growing communities, including roads, services, and other projects that make future housing development possible.

Mayor David West welcomed the announcement, calling it recognition of the City's efforts to address Richmond Hill's growing housing needs.

"We will never stop working hard to create more homes for our community, including affordable housing and long-term care housing that are desperately needed," West said.

The Building Faster Fund was launched by the Ontario government in 2023 to encourage municipalities to speed up housing construction while ensuring communities have the infrastructure needed to support that growth.

The announcement comes as Ontario continues to push for increased housing construction across the province. Between January and May 2026, Ontario recorded more than 26,000 housing starts, a 17% increase over the same period last year. Rental housing also reached record levels, with nearly 13,600 rental starts during the first five months of the year.

In addition to the Building Faster Fund, the province is investing more than $204 million in housing-related infrastructure projects across York Region, including more than $4 million earmarked for Richmond Hill.

As new homes continue to be built across the city, residents can expect ongoing discussions around growth, infrastructure, affordability, and how Richmond Hill balances development with maintaining the quality of life that has made it one of York Region's most desirable communities.
