Community Discussion Meetings in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada |
Oak Ridges Library events and Bruce Rhodes’ travel presentation |
In Richmond Hill, community discussion meetings offer a chance to slow down, hear a neighbour’s story and make a connection.
The next gathering runs Tuesday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at Oak Ridges Library.
The change of venue matters: renovations at Central Library have moved the meeting to Oak Ridges.
For anyone who usually heads to Central, checking the location before leaving home could spare an unnecessary trip.
This session features Bruce Rhodes’ travel presentation, a photographic look back at his recent journey through Eastern Europe.
His images will offer glimpses of places marked by the Second World War, bringing distant history into a neighbourly conversation.
It is a thoughtful subject for a group built around talking, listening and connecting.
Those attending for the first time, or returning after a break, are asked to email Marj beforehand.
Among upcoming Oak Ridges Library events on the meeting calendar are a presentation by Sarah Schuster of Miskwaadesi Studio on October 20 and an election-results review on October 27.
Later sessions are scheduled with Joanne Schreiber on November 2 and Laurel Douglass and Claudia Galleta on November 9.
Emily Jackson is scheduled to discuss winter driving on December 1.
For neighbours seeking conversation alongside a varied program, the invitation is simple: come ready to listen and take part. |

Miskwaadesi Studio presenting on October 20 is a great addition to the lineup. Sarah does really meaningful work and more people in Richmond Hill should know about it.
DianneFI didn't know about Miskwaadesi Studio before reading this. Just looked them up and yeah, really glad they're bringing Sarah in. Should be a good turnout.
We're delighted to have Sarah on the October 20 program, her work at Miskwaadesi Studio promises to be a genuinely enriching addition to the series.
Not sure why first timers have to email ahead just to attend a community meeting. Seems like it might put some people off showing up.
greg_oakridgesI think it's probably just so they have a rough idea of numbers. These smaller community rooms fill up faster than you'd expect. Still worth showing up either way I'd say.
It's simply a courtesy step so the organizers can plan ahead and give everyone a proper welcome, first-timers are absolutely encouraged to come, and a quick email to Marj is all it takes.
The winter driving session in December with Emily Jackson is actually the one I want to catch. Every year I tell myself I need a refresher on that stuff.
December 1 is one to mark on the calendar, winter driving is one of those topics where a timely refresher can make a real difference, and Emily Jackson is well placed to deliver it.
Sandra KowalskiSame here honestly. I always feel pretty confident until the first real snowfall and then I realize I've forgotten everything. December timing is pretty much perfect for it.
Good heads up about the location change. I made that mistake last time something moved and ended up wandering around for twenty minutes.
That's exactly why we flagged the venue change so prominently, Oak Ridges Library is a welcoming spot once you're there, and we didn't want anyone making an unnecessary detour.
TomH_RHHa, I've done exactly that. Showed up at the wrong branch and felt so silly. Good reminder to double check before heading out.
Bruce's Eastern Europe photos sound wonderful. History from someone who actually went there and took the pictures, not just a textbook. Really looking forward to this one.
PatriciaMAgreed, there's something so different about hearing someone talk through their own photos. You can actually ask them questions right there. Can't do that with a textbook!
There really is something special about hearing a story directly from the person who made the journey, Bruce's photographs of places shaped by the Second World War promise to bring that history alive in a very personal way.
Good heads up about the location change. Would have driven to Central for nothing without this.
Gary_ORSame, I almost did exactly that last month when they moved a different event. Oak Ridges is easy enough to get to but still annoying if you show up at the wrong place first.
Glad the heads-up was useful, as the article notes, checking the location before leaving home is well worth the extra moment, especially for regulars who are used to heading straight to Central Library.
Bruce's Eastern Europe photos sound really interesting. My grandfather served in WWII so that kind of presentation hits close to home for me.
Sandra M.That sounds like it would be really moving. My grandmother was from Poland so anything covering that part of Europe during the war gets me too. Hope someone shares photos from the presentation afterward.
Thank you for sharing that, Bruce's photographs of places shaped by the Second World War are sure to resonate with anyone who has a personal connection to that history, and moments like that are exactly what makes these gatherings so meaningful.
