Good heads up about the location change. Would have driven to Central for nothing without this.

Women astronomers take centre stage at Richmond Hill’s David Dunlap Observatory on Saturday, October 17, for a family-friendly evening of science and discovery.

From 7 to 9 pm, visitors can hear Koktay and Shelton speak about astronomy while younger guests explore hands-on space activities.

If the skies are clear, guests may also get a look through the observatory’s historic 74-inch telescope.

Stargazing is weather dependent, but the talk and activities will go ahead even if clouds roll in.

Presented by DDO Defenders in partnership with the City of Richmond Hill, the event celebrates women’s contributions to astronomy at a local landmark and gives children a chance to imagine their own place in science.

Registration is required.

Tuesday’s Lotto Max jackpot has climbed to $85 million, a Canadian record that has hopeful players across Ontario paying attention.

The excitement follows Friday’s draw, when Ontario players claimed sizable prizes even though the grand prize went unclaimed.

If you have a Friday ticket, check its draw date and every line, not just the numbers needed to win the jackpot.

Smaller prizes can still bring welcome news, especially for households managing everyday costs.

Tuesday’s winning numbers are not included here, so wait for confirmed results before celebrating or sharing news of a win.

If your ticket appears to be a winner, keep it secure and follow the applicable claim instructions.

Demetres has been crafting extraordinary desserts in Toronto since 1989, and their commitment to quality is genuinely unmatched. Using 100% real Madagascar vanilla, Barry Callebaut Belgian chocolate, Ontario farm-fresh cream, and daily-delivered fresh fruit, every bite reflects a standard most dessert spots simply won't bother with.

Their small-batch artisanal ice creams are made entirely in-house at their dedicated 20,000 sq ft Manufactory in Woodbridge — brownies baked, sauces cooked, fruits pureed, nuts roasted and ground. Nothing outsourced, nothing pretend.

Beyond ice cream, the menu spans Belgian waffles, French crepes, rich fudge cakes, cheesecakes, parfaits, milkshakes, and iced coffees. Whether you dine in, order delivery, or grab grocery pints, Demetres delivers a genuinely premium experience every time.

For an animal that needs a safe place, a second chance can change everything.

At Sue's Rescue and Responsible Rehoming, that has been the mission since 1992.

Today, one of the animals hoping for her own second chance is Beth, a young female Cane Corso in Richmond Hill. She’s described as sweet, curious and gentle, loves attention, enjoys meeting new people and is eager to learn.

Beth is vaccinated, has no listed special needs and is looking for a patient, committed family ready to provide the structure and care a young large-breed dog needs.

Sue’s Rescue is currently at capacity and unable to accept owner surrenders, underscoring the importance of responsible rehoming and long-term commitment.

Sue's Rescue has been around since 1992, that's incredible. Places like this don't get nearly enough credit for the work they do.

The food bank volunteer shortage in Richmond Hill is more acute than ever, as more families lean on community support for daily essentials.

Local organizations are struggling to keep up with record-high demand for food assistance, stretching resources to their limits.

Residents eager to help have plenty of community volunteer opportunities, from direct service to support roles behind the scenes.

One of the most impactful ways to contribute is by assisting with food donation sorting, helping ensure that supplies reach neighbours in need swiftly and efficiently.

Youth, especially high school students, can make a big difference through weekend drives and special programs, with local businesses also encouraged to join in team efforts.

The Furnace Is On. Your Skin Has Notes.

Late October in Richmond Hill is when your furnace and your skin start arguing.

Outside, the wind is doing its thing.

Inside, the heat is quietly drying out everything it touches, including you.

  • Swap #1: Turn the Shower Down a Notch

That long, steaming shower feels amazing in October. Your skin disagrees. Hot water can strip the natural oils your skin is trying to hold onto.

Go lukewarm, then moisturize while your skin is still a little damp.

Nivea Creme made for face, body and hands, with extra love for elbows and knees.

  • Swap #2: Give Your Night Cream a Promotion

Your summer moisturizer did a great job. It’s just not built for November.

Province Apothecary Nourishing + Revitalizing Moisturizer is made right down Yonge Street in Toronto and designed to replenish your skin’s moisture barrier against environmental dryness.

  • Swap #3: Your Pillowcase Is Picking Fights With Your Hair

Between toques, scarves and static, your hair already has a rough day.

It doesn’t need a rough night too.

Kitsch Satin Pillowcase is made of soft satin that won’t rough up your hair while you sleep, so you wake up with less frizz.

  • Swap #4: Give the Air a Drink Too

This one doesn’t go on your face at all.

If your skin feels tight no matter how much cream you use, the problem might be the room, not the routine.

A humidifier in the bedroom can do more overnight than a third layer of moisturizer.

The Beauty Drop

Fall skincare doesn’t need a whole new shelf.

Cooler showers.

A richer night cream.

A kinder pillowcase.

A little moisture in the air.

That’s it.

Congratulations.

You just winterized your skin before you even found the ice scraper.
